Darnell Kennedy’s 16-yard touchdown pass to Alvance Robinson with 6:36 remaining in the game gave the Wildcats their first lead, and South Georgia held on for a 47-45 win before 5,098 fans Saturday night at the Von Braun Center.
With the win, South Georgia evened the season series with Tennessee Valley 2-2.
Despite the loss – its first in eight home contests this season - Tennessee Valley (11-5) held the tie-breaking edge over South Georgia (11-5) for the South division title. Thanks to an Iowa win – the Vipers will be the number three seed in the American Conference and will play next Saturday at home against an opponent to be announced Monday.
As for the team’s health, Cokinos said he would know more by the next day after evaluating the status of the players following Saturday’s game.
South Georgia enters the playoff as a wildcard team. The Wildcats must wait for other playoff scenarios to be sorted out to learn of its next game. Although the Wildcats fell short of winning the division, they still savored winning a big division road game.
Kennedy finished the game 17 for 27 passing for 255 yards with six touchdowns and one interception. Eakin completed 28 of 47 attempts for 262 yards and six touchdowns, the last being his 85th of the season to set a new Viper single-season record for touchdown passes.
Robinson caught eight passes for 107 yards and three touchdowns for the Wildcats, while Jeremy Stephens led Tennessee Valley with eight receptions for 70 yards and three scores.
