Spokane Shock Head Coach CHRIS SIEGFRIED has been named the SFC Coach of the Year, as selected by a vote of af2 head coaches and beat writers.
Siegfried, in his first season as the Shock’s head coach, has guided his club to the National Conference Championship Game in the team’s first season of af2 play. They host the Arkansas Twisters Saturday night at 10:00 p.m. ET.
The Shock, guided by Siegfried, finished the regular season with a league-best 14-2 record and won the West Division regular season title. In the process, Siegfried has steadily climbed up the career coaching victories ladder. With his team’s 69-68 home win in Week 17, Siegfried became the af2’s all-time leader in coaching victories with 53. He passed former Rio Grande Valley and Tennessee Valley Head Coach Kevin Guy for the top spot on the af2’s all-time career coaching victories list. He’s also one of just three coaches in af2 history to hit the 50-win plateau.
Siegfried, in his fifth season as an af2 head coach, is currently 55-26 overall. Of his 55 wins, four have come in postseason play. Siegfried’s most successful playoff run came in 2002 as a rookie af2 coach with Cape Fear, a team that was also in its first season of play. Siegfried won two games to reach the American Conference Championship game that season before losing to Florida. This year was Siegfried’s fourth year out of his five as a head coach in which he recorded 10 or more wins in a season. He has won three division championships as well. Prior to this year, Siegfried claimed two division titles with the Cape Fear Wildcats (2002, 2003).
The 2006 Shock offense was electric, finishing seventh overall in the af2 at 55.8 points per game. The team also ranked second in the league in rushing touchdowns with 44. Four of Siegfried’s Spokane players were named to All-af2 teams.
Siegfried joins an impressive list of past Coach of the Year winners that includes Danton Barto (Memphis 2005), Les Moss (W-B/Scranton 2004), Kevin Guy (Tennessee Valley 2003), Ron Selesky (Albany 2002), Bret Munsey (Tennessee Valley 2001) and Mike Neu (Augusta 2000).
The 2006 ArenaCup playoffs continue this weekend with the Conference Championship games. Both games will be played on Saturday. In the American Conference Championship, the South Division Champion Florida Firecats host the East Division Champion Green Bay Blizzard at 7:30 p.m. ET. The National Conference Championship will feature the West Division Champion Spokane Shock hosting the Arkansas Twisters at 10:00 p.m. ET. The winner of each Conference Championship will meet at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico in San Juan, Puerto Rico for the 2006 ArenaCup on Saturday, August 26.
