The Boise Burn will have another Pac 10 defensive lineman on their roster when they take to the field in 2008. Today the team has announced that former University of Washington defensive end Mike Mapu has been assigned to the Boise Burn by the arenafootball2 League Office. FB/LB Derek Beardall, OL/DL Philemon Wilson and FB/LB Cody Wood have also been added to the Burn.
Playing under the last name of Mapuolesga with the Huskies, Mapu appeared in 17 games for UW from 2004-05, tallying 23 tackles, 4.5 for loss and 2 sacks.
Beardall, a defensive lineman out of the University of Utah, played in eight games for the Burn in 2007. Offensively, Beardall had 11 rushes for 26 yards and 2 touchdowns (both scores coming in the team’s season opening victory at Louisville) in five games as a fullback. Defensively, Beardall played three games on the defensive line recording 9 tackles (2 for loss). His season was cut short after suffering a concussion at Central Valley in week 6 of the 2007 season.
Wilson makes a return to Boise six years after playing for the Boise Stallions. Wilson spent last year with Bakersfield Blitz of the af2. Wilson played his college ball at Johnson C. Smith University.
Wood was the only player signed from the team’s November tryout. A 5-10, 225-pound baseball player out of Colorado State-Pueblo, impressed Coach Leslie at the Caven-Williams Indoor Sports Complex and was offered a spot on the Burn’s 35-man roster. Wood will compete with Derek Beardall for the fullback position.
